with or without diaphragms??

as long as it is dynamic what's the diff. :D

One would have thought that LDs would tend to be chosen over SDs, but then again, it's not really diameter or length, but what one does with it... er, the microphone, that is...

I wonder what Shure had in mind when it built the SM58, the 57 was fine as it was before the girls got on the scene.

I think it's the microphone, especially LARGE diaphragm. But most don't seem to appeciate the "Hixmix Technique" in this regard...

;)

this thread is a pretty good example of why a lot of women feel that the recording industry is dominated by thick headed sexist pigs. i realize that no harm was meant, but i'd still like to voice one opinion that this thread is fucking ignorant.

And your point is........?

That's just it, there is no fucking point..........to this whole thread. However, if it had been appropriately posted in THE CAVE, then I'm sure we could have found valid reasons for it's existence.

This is absolutely true. Women can be brutally graphic.

If I can add anymore perspective to this, I would just say I think we're sensitive about this because we get sexist remarks aimed at us personally where it doesn't belong, like in the workplace.

All women are very attuned to the connection between objectification of women and violence towards women, the fact that we still on average get paid less to do the same job, and that the majority of us at some point experience sexual harrassment in the workplace -- and I don't mean some guy in the next cubicle asking us on a date, I mean someone in a position of power making lude remarks or gestures and then threatening us with a loss of our jobs if we dare report it. 1 in 6 women can expect to be raped at some point in her lifetime [ http://www.rainn.org]; these are sisters, mothers, daughters, wives. It's disheartening because so many people -- men and women -- have tried to rectify these injustices in society. This desire to right these wrongs is not the same thing as purporting man-hating and calling it feminism, but then oftentimes women get accused of exactly that if they stand up for themselves.

Remember some other thread on here where a user posted something to the effect of, "if we find 12 women here we can have a swimsuit calendar"? That hit a sore spot with one guy, who wrote it wasn't funny because his sister came home from school crying that very day because of something inappropriate a teacher said to her. Geez, you'd think the younger generation would not have to be encumbered by this at this stage in the game, but if the bias isn't taught at home, girls can experience it at school ...

OK, off my soapbox now. I didn't really mean to come off as the heavy here, if you were wondering why we get our panties in a bunch, these are reasons why.

On a lighter note:

Now, to give you the answer to your question, do women like the mic or the man? Listen up, guys ....

The answer is ...

It can be either, neither, or both.

If you have to ask the question, you won't understand the answer, as the answer is within you, Grasshopper.

Geekgirl,

I'm afraid all the "disadvantages" you mention that women supposedly have in the workplace pretty much even out at some point.

I have worked with a lot of very pretty girls who, sadly, were woefully under-qualified for their positions. This, I suppose you could argue, is yet another form of discrimination women may face . . . but generally, it's the pretty ones who have to put up with the bulk of the sexual harrassment, am I correct?

I'm not saying sexual harrassment is justified, but neither is the fact that I've watched a lot of beautiful women getting jobs or even promotions over dudes who were more qualified. I remember once having to work under a chick who's past career highlight was a manager of a fast food restaurant. And being pretty hot.

As evil as this may sound, I wouldn't feel sorry for her if she was to be "harrassed."
