I like building stuff... I think it would be neat to have a Do-it-Yourself forum here.

Although I've never built anything, electronic, studio/recording related, I'm itching to try.

This would be a place we could exchange schematics, parts lists, PCB layouts, maufacturer/supplier lists...etc.

It wouldn't have to stop with electronic gear, it could also be a place
to talk about building other studio gear like desks, cabinets, racks..etc.

What do you guys think?

A while back people were asking for the same thing, so I created an email-based list for that purpose.

About six people signed up, there were about 10 posts, and it seems to have died due to lack of traffic.

But, you're welcome to sign up, and say hi, and start a conversation on DIY and I'm sure that would pick things up quite a bit.

Normally I'd consider that my job, however with the holidays, dead vehicles Iv'e been fixing, and so forth, my time has been a little limited lately.

Please, feel free:

Here goes again...I'm behind it all the way...I know several other would be too. This comes up several times a year but for some reason it just doesn't happen.

I have never understood why.

I started an automotive-related DIY list about six months ago, and now it averages 50 posts a day, has about 30-35 members, and minimal politics and BS.

Anyway, link above if people want to jump in.

DIY?.. Did you even LOOK to see if a DIY thread existed already?
I SCREAMED for a "sticky" about DIY 6 months ago. It fell on the owners or mods dead ears. Apparently the ONLY thing they care about is ad revenue/hits. This could be a GREAT site if only they would allow some "stickys". Do you know how many times "rigid fiberglass" has been recommended here? Only about 10 million times...fuck. I don't even think they read this forum.....Hey, lets just see :D

HEY MODS.... KNOCK KNOCK....ANYBODY HOME? (echo! echo! echo!)

I've also been posting some of my stuff on the "existing DIY thread". I think one person looked. So much for DIY here. I'm beginning to believe very few people have the time, ingenuty, interest or whatever. Oh well. Its probably due to the "all I need is a computer and a mic" syndrome that seems to permeate this and other sites. sigh...MS strikes again. .....ALL YOU NEED IS XP AND YOU CAN BE A STAH! ...give me a break.

Hey Light...you don't drink a LOT of coffee do ya? Seem a little wound up today. :D Take a deep cleansing breath in and let the tension fade away :D .

I think you're probably right regarding the available time for most folks have to just work stuff out. For me the time comes and goes...I'll get a week or two down time and I'll jump into something and then nothing for 6 months or more. Agreed to this as I can understand why there is intermittent resurfacing of the DIY questions.

I for one have scanned many if not most of the DIY threads but often times they lack continuity. (I've seen the great stuff posted by Light and Frederic btw). The problem is that so many of the DIY threads start out just like this one..."any diy'rs out there?" and off it goes...this a way and that. Having a committed DIY section would let the threads get a little more organized.

Frederic has started a little something over there in MidiMonkey land. It's not rolling as fast as I thought it would but I do have to say, he's saved my butt from pointless stuggling on a couple of my own DIY project (ergo the value of such a forum).

Light????? And no, I don't drink a lot of coffee. When I hurt, I get tense, and today I've had a bout with an intestinal infection. Sorry if I was a wee bit cranky... :o

Ooops...my bad :o Rick, I was looking reading a couple other posts and had Light on the brain...sorry to hear you're down. Hope you get to feeling better very soon. Just razzin you a bit. :D

i signed up for the DIY list just for the hell of it. i plan on building a nice little rack sometime soon, as well as bass traps and stuff, so i'll probably be posting a couple of questions on there when the time comes.

Yep, I did... I didn't say anything about there not being a THREAD. I just think that an entire FORUM section should be devoted to DIY, not just a thread.

Nothing against MiniDisk, but if there can be a forum for MiniDisk alone (which by the way only has 2 threads), why can't we have a forum for DIY alone?? I'm sure it'll accumulate more than 2 threads in short time...

perhaps the event electronics forum could be removed

There's a simple solution to this, sign up on a DIY gear forum......

If the mods here aren't going to heed the calls of it's subscribers, go somewhere else.

you mean there's mods here??

Sure, I'll jump on board................................but this all seems oddly fmiliar?!?! :D

I could knock up a quick forum if you wanted me too?
Me too. In fact, I've had this on the net for awhile, but I don't have much time to invest in maintenence or even posting stuff. But here it is if anyone is interested. I've only posted a few things so far, but I'll upload a bunch of stuff tonight. Its basicly empty at the moment, cause no one knows about it. I just didn't feel like posting a link till I had time to deal with it. Oh well. Heres a link anyway.

FYI guys...Frederic's got one up all ready over at midimonkey.

Yes, I sure do.

We even have some traffic, finally. Sign up here:

http://midimonkey.com/mailman/listinfo/studio-diy

It's email, not web-based, which is just a preference of mine (since it's my server :D). I find email lists significantly faster, more interactive, and so on.

Posting to the web just takes too much time.

But then again, I'm on about 40 different lists LMAO.
