Do I need to upgrade my recording hardware?

Hi everyone:

Looking for some advice. Any responses are lovingly appreciated (in a manly way, of course).

I want to ask if my recording hardware setup sucks, or if there is something wrong in the chain. Just to let you know, I record mainly me, playing guitar, bass and singing. I may eventually also be rcording a set of v-drums, though I'm using loops for that right now. So...I run my signal through a Mackie 1202VLZ Pro mixer (using the channel inserts), then into a Delta 66 sound card and into my computer. When I use my mike for singing, I run it straight into the Mackie and do whatever processing I need afterward, in Cakewalk Sonar 2. When I use my guitar, I first run it through a signal processor (right now that's an old Intellifex), and through amplification and cab emulation (V-Amp, POD) then into the Mackie.

Now, I know people have opinions on direct guitar recording, but that's not what I want to ask about here. What I'd like to know is:

1) Using the Mackie in the way I'm using it, I am utilizing its internal preamps. Is this a mistake when recording guitar, considering I'm already amping my guitar before it gets to the Mackie?

2) I am concerned that all the connections, wires, etc. are degrading my tone. Since I bought this setup a couple of years ago, I am aware that there are simpler ways (Firewire, USB, etc.) of getting the sound into my computer. Heck, there's a new BOSS multi-effects and preamp thingie (the GS-10) that goes straight into the computer via FireWire or USB and completely negates the need for a mixer or a preamp or anythgin else. Is there a less convoluted way of doing it that is also cost-effective? I can't tell you how much I can afford, because the options are so pleniful, but if you see what I've been using so far, that will give you a good idea as to how much I can spend.

Any suggestions? Any opinions? Any advcie? Is this still a pretty good setup? Am I using it the wrong way? Are there any good, simpler alternatives?

Thanks so much. I haven't been around here much lately, but you guys were real helpful in the past.

I have never used a Mackie but I believe that it has line level input. If true, bypass the preamp and see how that sounds.
