Greetings, boys and girl.

I am here with a simple question. I finally saved up enough to buy myself the Allen & Heath ZED-436, and I'm wondering, will I need an audio interface to record it into my iMac 21.5" since the ZED has a USB connection.

Thank you all,

Thomas

If you wish to record more than 2 tracks at once, then I believe the answer is yes. The board has direct outs on each mono channel though, which would allow recording into individual channels into your iMac, via an interface. Out of the box, it seems to only give the ability to record a stereo signal via USB.

How do you mean? Let's say I use 16 mics for the drums, and in Logic I want these 16 mics to be one track for the drums. Than I have three mics for rhythm guitar, and three for lead, these are than two separate tracks. Than, along with the drum track, I will have three tracks, am I right?

Well, no. The USB output from the ZED, only supplies two tracks to Logic, at a time. You can always overdub to other tracks. Only two at once tho. :(

So that means I should get an audio interface? Any recommendations?

I would not be the best guy to answer that. You basically need an interface with only line inputs, as you can use the direct outs of the ZED. In other words, you do not need an interface with preamps.
