Maybe someone here can help me... im not sure if i need a better soundcard and how important one really is. Currently i have an MXL V63m going into a behringer mic200 pre amp, which then goes into my computer via the soundcard which the computer came with using an adapter... i'd like to know if i should get a proper soundcard for recording... im recording just vocals... also any recommendations on a good soundcard? budget is anywhere from $0 to maybe $250.
Thanks

If you're using the onboard soundcard for anything more than computer gaming, then the answer is yes! Get another soundcard. I'm a big fan of Echo Electronics line of soundcards. Look for a Gina 24/96 or a Darla 24/96 on Ebay. I just picked up a used Gina for $85. A couple of years ago this thing was $249 new. They still hold their own and will be such a big improvement over the onboard sound you'll be kicking yourself why you didn't do it sooner.

ok thanks... anymore recommendations would be appreciated... :)

M-Audio Delta 1010lt - $200
M-Audio Audiophile 2496 $99
M-Audio Audiophile 192 $150
Echo Audio MiaMIDI $130

Stay away from anything made by E-Mu.

I'm gonna agree with that. I havent used any of thier products, BUT i just dont trust anything made by Creative.

Stick with the MAudio or Echo or Presonus stuff. There are a few Firewire pieces out now that look promising.
Edit- i own the Delta 1010lt and Ive had the Maudio Audiophile 2496 in the past. VERY satisfied with both cards.

see if there is anywhere or anybody near you you can listen....

to some of the reccommendations. because if you can't hear a difference, and you are getting done what you need for now, get some more experience wth what you got, IMO.

once you get a new soundcard, you can post saying 'i am using a berri mic pre, should i get another'? and everbody will say 'oh yeah, man, get a dmp3 at least' then you can post about the mic you are using and everbody will say 'oh man, at least get a sm58 or a b1' or whatever.

these are all tools, and if the tools you have now are not getting in the way of what you are doing, KEEP DOING IT! the world has enough gear junkies.

IMO, YMMV

ok, this is what i got... im going to go with either:

M-Audio Delta 1010lt
M-Audio Audiophile 2496
M-Audio Audiophile 192

I have heard the delta 1010lt can be noisy sometimes, but on the other hand i have heard it can be great... i have also heard great things about the 2496... the 192 i dont know of much at all... what should i go with? im not sure if this will matter at all but ill be recording rap vocals...
