i just bought my computer about 3 months ago, it is top of the line for gaming with a somewhat decent soundcard.

if i buy a soundcard specifically for recording, will it sound significantly better?

what kind of card should i buy?
i own a fostex DMT-8VL with an optical out

What card is in it now ?
An upgrade is based on quality AD/DA converters, the # of ins and outs you want, optical ? Digital or S/PDIF ?
You can start with an audiophile 2496 for around $175 or upwards of $800 for an RME Multiface.
Decide your needs first.

i just need one input, im interseted in using the optical transfer but i dont know anything about it

i heard it gives perfect quality

my soundcard now was only like $60 with a 1/8th jack input

Actually I just bought a new Audiophile 2496 at http://www.newegg.com for $120.00 which I found about on another thread here at HR.com. I haven't been able to install it yet so I can't tell you first hand how good or bad it is but it is continually recommended by others on this board who have had more experience with it.
