Do I need a mixer if I get a preamp for my Audiophile 2496?

I'm going to use the mixer/soundcard approach outlined on the Tweakz guide for noobs. Could I also just use a preamp like a M-Audio DMP3 instead of the mixer? Would I get better quality preamps on the DMP3 than a Behringer Xenyx 1204? Thanks.

Yes although the mixer will give you a heaphone amp and sends/returns for reverb and stuff while tracking. But going from the output of the DMP-3 to the soundcard input will work fine.

Haven't used the Behringer mixer, the DMP-3 is good quality though especially considering the price. I'd wager it's a better pre than you'd find in the Behri mixer.
