Do i need A/D Conversion if im Recording to a Computer?

I have a Laptop with Sonar 3 installed and i want to run the signal from my condencer mic into the laptop through the 1/8 mic jack on the the sound card. after going through the preamp do i need to have A/D conversion or some type of signal limiting? all your help and comments would be greatly appriceated.
