Do i just neet ADAT's & a mixing board?

if i want to start recording on ADATs, do i just need those and and a mixing board and some cables to work it? or are there other kind of do-hickeys that i need? i'm thinking two adats and a mackie 1604 vlz. let me know if i need anything else. thanks for your help!
 
That'll work pretty good to start with. You can use the mic pre's in the Mackie to drive the inputs of the ADATs (my first set up with ADATs was two and a StudioMaster 16 channel desk). The newer 1604VLZ's have an insert on all 16 channels that can be used as direct outs not to mention the four sub groups. Very powerful set up). You can add stand alone mic pre's and compressors and such later as money allows (and trust me on this one, it's an endless quest for gear once you start.:D

This never occured to me how does one go about using the inserts on a 1604 as a direct out? For some reason my simian brain is not following. Thanks for any info.

When unconnected, the inserts act as an output right after the micpre that is connected back to the input of the channel. (depends on board!! some inserts are after EQ!) When connected, you take the output, route it to some gear (mostly compressor/gates) and feed it back to the input.

The inserts need special cables, the tip and ring function as input and output, through the same cable!! Now if make a special cable, that connects the tip and ring on one side, and has a mono jack on the other, you can just get the signal out of the board, without interrupting the channel...

And for your original question: you will also need mics, stands, amp, monitors, headphones etc for monitoring, alot of cables, preferably some effectprocessors (for reverb etc)... Don't underestimate the cost of these 'smaller' parts!
 
So let me ask you this: if my ADATS are RCA in, how would I use the inserts at that point? I have insert cables that I use for effects on individual channels, but they are 1/4 inch.
 
No problem. You need patch cables with 1/4" on one side and RCA on the other. Plug the 1/4" into the Mackie's channel insert to thje first "click" and you're off to the races.
 
Tight!! Thanks for the info Rat! So much for not experimenting or reading the manual very closely, although, I dont think they ever mention the ability to use the inserts like that. Well...maybe they did and just didn't get it.
One more question if you dont mind, is that direct out going to behave just like the 1-8 direct outs do? As far as the trim and the eq and stuff?
 
When using the inserts as direct outs in this manor, only the trim control at the top of the channel strip affects the signal going to tape. You're grabbing signal right after the trim and BEFORE the EQ/fader.
 
And with mackie, I think the first click-in with a standard 1/4" gives you D/O without breaking the internal path in the channel strip.
