I'm running ProTools LE 6.x and using an 001. Do I have to use the 001 for AD/DA or is there a way to use something better and still use ProTools LE?

Yes there is a way to use something better.

you can use the digital inputs and outputs to bypass the digi converters

How would I get the output of a different converter to digi pci card or computer?

I read something somewhere once where there was a PCI card that could be installed that would let you use any interface with protools....I dont know if it is fact or fiction...but I think I saw it on ebay...

That had occured to me because ADAT is really the only reason I'm using the Yamaha O1v board. Are there any AD/DA convertors that have ADAT? I haven't seen any.

What about the PreSonus Digimax?

not that I'm recommending that but there's plenty of units out there at do AD/DA with lightpipe i/o..

Wait a minute! You have an 01V? Why not just use that as your front end into the 001 via ADAT? In my experience, the ADDA on it is good, and the pre's are pretty nice.

You can probably also Midi into protools for a worksurface, no?

In any case, something like converter quality won't play a noticeable role in your recordings unless you're REALLY on top of your game in everything else. What about the 001's converters are you not down with?

just keep in mind that those adat interfaces only pass 8 tracks of 16bit/44-48k... or 2 tracks of 24 bit in spdif format...

wrong.

They can do 8 tracks at 24 bit 44.1/48

Also, some can now do 4 tracks of 96k using smux.

then it's changed it seems.... IIRC it was originally set at 16 and then moved to 20 bit as alesis didnt expect the adat to go anyfurther than the 20 bits on their better machine... and yes the higher sample rate and a reduction in track count can be had but thought he wanted specificly 8 channels...
