hello everybody. i'm kind of new to the whole digital recording thing, but i know a little something. i just want to know, do i have to have a computer based system? i'm not the most computer savvy person in the world, can't i get away with one of those yamaha or roland virtual studios things? i need the pros and cons from someone that knows before i go spending my money on one or the other and end up regretting it in the end. thanks for the help.

No you don't need a computer, yes you can get away with one of those virtual studio things. Until you get to the point where you wish you had more tracks, more effects, more anything. Computers are a lot easier to add more stuff to

so sayeth bullshit...so sayeth the flock! i agree

I figure one of those digital porta studio kinda thingys would be kinda cool. Drag it to a friends house and jam out... I suppose editing stuff might be a little trickier, but even that $1200 Tascam 2488 has a little screen so maybe editing wouldn't be that hard. fx might be another story though....
I think that 2488 looks really cool. Dunno if it works very good or not but it does look cool. I remeber when the Tascam 488 came out in the early 90s and I paid almost that much for one of those.. Man this stuff has come a long way in 13 years...
