OK, don't everyone talk at once!

I think I've figured it out...it's an unbalanced 1/4" TS cord, into the left line in jack on the 1180 (RCA). I have yet to find a decent unbalanced cable with 1/4" TS at one end and RCA at the other. Guess I'll just have to use an adapter...

I don't think so Hepme. I'm not particularly familiar with the 1180, but if your standalone works like most of them, the RCA line in jacks are for a CD or cassette player, and are looking for -10dBV, a consumer level line in. The +4 dBU output from your pre will probably clip the crap out of them. Most standalones have variable impedence 1/4" jacks so as you turn up the channel input volume, it gradually switches from a line level input to a mic level input. The 1/4" jacks are designed so they can accept a balanced TRS line or an unbalanced TS mic cable. Use a balanced out from your pre, either XLR or 1/4" TRS, depending on the outs on your pre, to a 1/4" TRS on the 1180. Turn the channel input volume to zero (line level), and then crank the pre a little until you get enough signal. If that doesn't run hot enough, you can increase the channel input volume on the 1180 just a little, until the two units match up. Hope that helps.-Richie

um ...now this may be wrong but i have my dmp-3 run with 1/4 inch jack out of the back right into the instrument "in" on my br1180??.....so mic xlr -->preamp---> 1/4 first jack on the left on the back of the boss..

Well, I'm wrong, so I'll be the first to correct myself. I just went and studied up a little on the 1180, and I guess the 50K ohm line in jack is the closest thing to a jack for a pre on the thing. An RCA? That's really dumb. The least they could do is give you a 1/4" balanced line in. My Avalon, for instance, only has XLR outs. Getting from an XLR to an RCA jack would be a royal pain in the ass, and you have no balanced line in at all. You can work around it, but I'd say this thing wasn't designed with outboard gear in mind.-Richie

I've been running a mic pre-amp through the 1180-CDs line input for about a year now with no problems and it works well trying to get dynamic mike levels up high enough for a decent track. This was the method suggested by a Roland/Boss tech rep.
