Looking at getting non-sucky preamps. I don't want to buy cheap and have to upgrade later, but I'm obviously on a bitter budget as well. From my searching here, these are the best buys for the money, does anybody have experience to compare them to each other? My preference is to get two channels right away, but if the Rane is that much better than the DMP3 I'm totally down with getting one now and another later. The Brick, it's billed as an instrument preamp, should I just not worry about it? I'm looking for a versatile tool here, for all of my micing/DI applications from rock to, well, other kinds of music. Sorry, I know cheap preamps is a tired subject, but I haven't seen these a/b'd or anything.

The Brick is by far the best mic preamp of all those. And it functions as a good instrument DI too. You probably won't ever really need to upgrade and get rid of the Brick, it can sit within your collection if you get some higher-end pres later.

i have the DMP3, and im very very pleased with it..it never stops surprising me. the Rane is supposed to not work that well with acoustic instruments, but dunno if thats what you're recording. the brick is good.

if i were you, i would wait a bit and see what ppl have to say about the new electro harmonix all tube pre. u can get two of those for 180 each. i would bet (mind u, i havent tried it - but all u have to do is wait a bit for reviews) that it will be more or less the same as the brick and a step up from the dmp3.

im getting 2 in a few months. probably selling the dmp3.

Thanks for the words, folks. I hadn't heard of the electro harmonix, I'll definitely look them up. Anybody got info on those pres, or other thoughts?

I doubt the Brick is as good as either the DMP3 or the Rane on acou guit. Depending on the song, I often choose the DMP3 over my Sebatron (which is reportedly more transparent than the Brick). I'm sure the Brick beats both the DMP3 and Rane in every other category though, especially DI.

If I was doing acoustic based music I'd choose the DMP3. If I was recording lots of elec guit, bass, and vox I'd go with the Brick.

Also, If you have the $ for the Brick now you might want to get it while you have the cash. You can always pick up a DMP3 later for $150.

they're shipping now..u have a thread right at the "rack" forum...everyone is waiting anxiously for Ben to get his...

for the price of the brick, u can get two of these.

I have both a DMP3 and The Brick (no experience with the Rane).

The DMP3 is my go to pre for acoustic guitar because it is quiet & clean. What the mics hear is pretty much what gets recorded. For the price, it is a great little 2-channel pre. It works fine for vocals, but doesn't really add much to the sound of the mic/voice other than gain. I haven't used the DMP3 much as a DI, so I can't comment on that.

The Brick is excellent on vocals and miking amps, and is a killer DI for bass. While also a quiet pre (though the max gain is less than the DMP3), it has a more colored sound to my ears and does not seem to transmit the transients of acoustic guitar quite as well as the DMP3. It can be useful for some tones (slightly duller, chunky tone), but it is not my first choice.

From what I've read about the Rane, it is an excellent sounding pre (no DI) for the price, but seems to lack a little in the bass response department.

I've used the dmp-3, as well as the Rane extensively. I've tried the brick out ... loved it as a bass DI. Not overly thrilled with it othewise, though. Kind of disappointed, as it doesn't really "drive" well at all. Sounds farty when driven hard.

Anyway, I really can't say enough good things about the Rane. The whole bass rolloff thing isn't a problem from what I can tell. I guess it might be if you were trying to record elephant herds and/or earthquakes. I just think it's a really clean, fast, and detailed pre.

.

Thanks guys, this is the kinda info I'm looking for. Didn't realize the Rane isn't the DI as well, that might factor into my decision.
