I just bought a CAD M9 and am looking for a decent quality preamp. For my current price range the M-audio DMP3 looks like a great choice...it seems to get excellent reviews. I record onto my Mac and use Garageband, and am currently using a M-audio mobile pre USB to get audio on the computer. Anyways im wondering if not having XLR outs (and using the 1/4s) on the DMP3 will effect my sound going into the Mobile Pre USB? Do I even need the DMP3? It seems like i would have two preamps in a row. If anyone cares to comment on this, thanks in advance.

Noooo Mr. Bill! The mobilepre *is* a preamp with USB out. No point in adding another pre to the signal chain.-Richie

So would a compressor be a wise choice, or am I stuck with using software effects?

There are no insert points on the mobile pre. Unless you are going out of the analog outs to a soundcard, an outboard compressor would be pretty hard to patch up.-Richie

So your saying I can't go mic into compressor, compressor into the xlr or 1/4 of the mobile pre? I use a line6 POD in between my guitar and the mobile pre and it sounds fine.

You can probably use another pre and then into a compressor and then into the line in. It is a high impedience input, but it may still work OK. It's worth a try. Unlike mics, you can return Mic pres and compressors if they don't work out for you.
