I just finished putting a Bass track down on a tune.
I was writing down all the settings in case I wanted to change something in the future when I noticed I had the filter on from a previous track.

I couldn't really hear a difference through the headphones or the small monitors I'm using. Will it lack bottom end if I were to play it on a bigger system somewhere? Is that a no-no?

It's probably not a good idea, but if it sounds alright to you, then that's what counts.

depending on the song and style it could be ok. sometimes i roll off the low end of the bass guitar to free up space for the kick drum bottom end.

It sounds all right on my monitors but they don't go real low like if a system has a sub-woofer. I'm gonna redo the track. I was looking for an excuse to be laxed and I promised myself I wouldn't do that. That's the beauty of home recording, right, do it the best you possibly can.

Do you guys who are doing home recording generally have sub-woofers with the nearfield type monitors?

Regarding subwoofer...

My system DOES include a subwoofer, however, I only use it to reference songs that require that REAL low. I have a "switcher" or a speaker selector that I use to referenc the low end on about 3 or sometimes 4 different types of speakers just to hear what I'm getting as far as low end on just about everything.

The different types of speakers I use are:

1-my main monitors. I stick with it.

2-a stereo "boom-box". It sounds funny, but generally, if the low end is good here, it sound GREAT everywhere else.

3-a set of shelf-system speakers.

4-this I switch between a set of computer speakers and a set of car stereo speakers.

This type of routing or switch system is pretty easy to make yourself, like I did. But for me, if the low end sounds great in these things, it will just plain sound great.

it depends on the song really. a lot of the time, i will roll off some bass of the bass guitar, so that the kick has some room.

but it totally depends on your souce signal really
