Has anyone seen the TASCAM DM-24 sweeeeeeeeeeeeet
(owwww! got a tooth ache)

but the adat optical cards are like $400 for one still it's a
swweeeeeeeeet board

(owwwww my molars)

I'm looking into buying this board, along with a motu 2408mkII, and either cubase vst/32 or Sonar. Does anyone know if this board can be used to control transport operations in either software package? What about software mixer faders, pan, mute, etc? While I love what I'm reading and have seen of the board so far, I only want to get it if I'll be able to utilize it for tracking, mixing, and as a control surface for whatever software I go with. If I can't accomplish this then I'm going to consider getting a HD recording unit or a mackie 24x8 analog mixer (d8b is a bit too pricey for me). Anyone know how well this board will integrate into either software package?

That's another perk

It will do control transport operations, MMC, MTC, and all that good stuff.

This better the BOARD to get, I mean 01V is dated 02R is too much and as you said the D8B is $$$, but as I've read on the TASCAM webpage, they said that the TM1000, 2000 and D4000 just went caput.

read for yourself: www.tascam.com go to FORUM

but for a 32 channel board, this board is SWEEEEEEET

I've read that Sonar doesn't receive MMC. It will sync to MTC but from the sounds of it I'd have to hit the transport controls in the software (play or record) then it would sync up to the MTC off the DM-24... except the dm-24 doesn't generate MTC, or so I've gathered from reading the manual and whatnot.

Does Cubase read MMC? I'd really like to get this board but I need more of a warm fuzzy feeling about it being able to work nearly 100% with some software package (even if I have to make a custom map for it).

Cubase does have MMC

Cubase does have MMC, when I was running 24 track ADAT & BRC
I had to sync cubase via MMC/MTC to the BRC, so that all could play in sync. I have the 3.7 version.

I would'nt put it past, but just about every new piece of gear has its dilemma & dissapointments, I'm really into the board for the
EQ's/Effects on Each channel, 32 channel board, and the automation and storage of mixes. I have two Fostex VM200 and they are great for what I do, but the TC WORK & ANTARES software has the advantage over them, plus I needed two to make a 32 channel mixer --- the disadvantage, only 16 digital & 16 analog, plus the EQ's & Effects are only on the analog ch.

I need24 digital with the effects on each channel, that's my reason for getting it. Also, cause a D8B is outta my range

Yep

The D8B is over priced. The simular Yamaha looks sweet.

Having Fun

This unit is full of features and enjoying getting to know them.

Manual is 147 pages and complete but lacks intros into why one would turn on this or that feature sometimes.

I had no idea how many effects is has Chorus, Ensemble, 3rds, 5ths, reverb, delay, and about 200 others.

Also about 10 compresser mike settings saving money on compresser mikes.

There are some limitiation between the TDIF and lightpipe that I am finding out. TDIF has more features.

One last thing it come with the returs active. So hooking up a mike and singing away won't work till you shift the input, (which is graphically displayed and dynamically updated, very cool)
from return to input is necessary.

Loaded with stuff a techies toybox

In case you haven't found it yet, there are snapshot libraries on the thing. It comes with 4, in ROM. Recording and Mixing in normal and high sample rate configurations. Switching to recording will update all the I/O and other settings to a recording and monitoring setup (monitor on aux 1-2). It is a very nice board, just wish mine didn't die on me. I'm hoping that the new EPROMs that their tech support people are sending me will clear up the problem. Ended up with a blank screen coming up after fader calibration. Very much bummed right now. :(

pvolcko, I hope everything works out great for your board (in terms of getting it fixed). ;)

The eeproms they sent didnt' do the job. They are shipping me a replacement and they'll be getting mine back to take a look at it and find out whats up with it. Only bad thing is that I won't see it until after new years due to the holiday and the shipping nightmare that creates. I'm very happy with their willingness to help on this though. they are actually paying full shot for shipping of both units. I've been very impressed with their support on this product.

Hickup #1

Booted today with an error and went back to defualts.

Error was "Out of Scram Range"

It's working now but I lost my saved settings.

I seem to remember seeing something about this error on the tascam forums, might want to search through them to see.

I'm not sure. Jace said that I should expect it soon after the new year begins. I think they shipped it out Thursday or Friday last week, but I haven't been sent any tracking info for it. I hope they sent it out already. I'd really hate to be into the second week of Jan before getting this new board. They guys at Tascam and the place I bought it (Guitar Center in Rochester, NY) have been great, but it is coming up on a month and I still am without a mixer for my new recording gear. I've been busy dealing with other things like getting the computer hardware and software playing nicely together, but I'm still getting quite anxious about not having this issue of the mixer resolved yet.

Agreed

Seeing strange issues myself. While I love the board, I don't want to spend my life working out their bugs.

Just for an update to those following the thread. I got the new DM-24 two days ago. Haven't had a problem so far, but then again I haven't had a chance to really use it too awefully much. I'll be doing more with it today, but so far so good.

tntmail - I know what you're talking about. Luckily I wasn't in any kind of production situation where I needed the thing to work as advertised immediately. I'd definitely suggest to those who are thinking of bring one or more of these boards into that kind of environment that they plan on a month or so to get the kinks worked out, or at least use it in a secondary capacity for the first week or two. I think that a lot of the problems being seen on these first boards have to do with in store eprom upgrades and getting manufacturing processes worked out. In the next couple of months I think that the problem count will drop off significantly as Tascam gets things implemented in manufaturing and the second wave fo boards hits the streets. And I can understand why they didn't catch some of these issues. Often companies will work with prototype boards during Q/A and these kinds of issues simply don't show up until production models are in the hands of the users. Don't see the same kind of problems in software releases, in those they companies simply can't test with the wide array of configurations of systems and software that the product will see in the real world.

Jace was real cool about helping me out with the problems I was having and they took care of me fairly well. If you haven't already I'd get in touch with him via email or call their tech support line. The problems your seeing could be solved by a fairly simple emprom replacement or it might take a board exchange. Either way, they'll work through it with you and get you squared away.

Competition is Good

I hope Tascam really puts their minds to growing this board.
It has some great features and a few limitations but none that were too bad. Tascam could realy push aside some competition at this price with the O2R getting old and DA7 having no 96K.

We all need jobs so I hope so.

There support is great.

I had to get going so I bought a D8B.

I hope they get there someday...

I am running a 2408 and SONAR, and have been watching the progress on this mixer since its announcment.

Unfortunately, no one has gotten it working with any DAW software to their satisfaction. Some are holding out hope for the coming HUI emulation that is coming in a future EPROM release, but so far no dice.

I would buy this in a minute if I thought it would work, but so far my research says "not yet".

There are success stories from Tascam MDR users, but no DAW users yet.
