Alright, in a previous artical/post, I had been given help on what to do to make "beats" more intriuging(sp?) , But as my attempt got worse & worse, I decided to just write a song, & try & make a beat to that song, knowing how the tempo should go..So, I did just that, I will not post the lyrics, YET, But I will post a link to the beat, I want opinions on it, & if I should add anything to it, or take anything away, parts of it I'm sure I will be told to remove, but I won't due to , it goes with the lyrics...Another reason I'm not posting the lyrics is because I'm missing a Verse :( & I don't want to feel stupid. But you get the main idea from the beat, Comment PLEASE...& Thanks in advance.

Here it is...

Well, first you might need to get some fat drum samples to add to the sample library. Drum sounds make a big difference. That's what I first hear.

Second, more Melody. Your bass is the main instrument for the melody. Add more instruments over the bass melody like a piano, string, synth....

The bass line reminds me of a nice old school beat. If you are going for that feel, you need a more live bass sound and add variations to it. Also, big drums will add to it.

But, ya if you add a piano on the 1 & 2 that will add to it. And use chord keys.

If you have any question about chord keys or what ever, hit me up. :D

Here's an example. It's R&B so I thought you could hear more of the production.

Now, the beat has a main melody and a background melody playing off of the main. The spanish guitar effect was made by using the modualtion (Pitch) wheel. On the end of the note just push the wheel up and down a little. Not to much... The bass has it's own melody, but it uses the same keys. Also, at parts the Guitar is layered. The kick and claps are also layered. When you make a beat, it helps to think of each intrument as a member in a band. Each instrument plays it's part and comes in at a certain time and place. It also sets the mood and feeling. It's a composition of elements and they all work together. That's what makes a song sound good or bad. It's the harmony between instruments. You can learn about timbral balance later. Timbral balance is the relationship between sounds. Some instruments can play the same frequency and clash with each other.

Oh ya, Compose your beats in 6 or 8 bar loops and have an end tag to finish the last bar. If you listen to the Feelings beat. It changes up on the last bar loop.

Wow. That is some helpful tips man, Thanks a ton!...& that beat is P.H.A.T.! if I must say so myself, Not too much to it, Just alot of layereing & Talent & that's one nice beat...Mad props, I'm gonna have to work harder now but that just opened my eyes up, to alot of new things, what program did you use to make that initial song? Curious. Thanks again.

Ya, the beat is simple but because it is layered and composed, it doesn't need much. And I always say "less is more".

The beat was made on Reason by my boy D-Animals. He makes most of the beats. I just polish, master, and finish the beats up ready for projects.

I don't make as much beats as I used to. I mostly do the business side of things right now. But, I still got the knowledge... :D

Ya, your getting the idea. More of a composition. Intro, verse, hook, verse, hook, verse....

Try making a drum break down on ever 8 th bar. Like a dum roll. Still needs something in the verses. Keep it up... :D

Here's a little exercise I used to do when i first started making traxx. I would listen to one of my favorite joints, and try to recreate it, sound by sound. That way it got me used to putting different sounds and sequences together. I was able to see which sounds tended to go together, and how to create complete traxx in song form. I say give it a try a couple times. I guaranty it'll help you.

Indeed, I have tried that, Didn't work very well, Due to I can't find the right "sounds" to relate to the actual song, like for instance, the "melody" type sound in eminem - Without Me, Couldn't find that, but I got the bassline...I'll find other songs & work on those, THanks for the tip :)

 DjIce (PS Check the EDIT in my last post here)

The sounds aren't always going to be exact, just find something close enough. These dudes have access to hundreds of thousands of dollars worth in modules. It's not the sound you're working on it's the technique.

Ya, work on your technique first. I have 50 gigs of sounds, but it took me time to collect. I don't even use all the samples. Work with what you got. You can get free Reason Refills and .Wav files on-line.

You could also have all the pro sounds in the world, but if you don't know how to compose a beat or make your own techniques, it's useless.

Perfect your craft...

Word...I wish had all this support/advice when I first started....A yo Beats, when you gonna get at me so we can do some buisness?

Alright that makes sense, yea' Well, I just took 10 Minutes & I made this beat, Just a little somethin' I want you to tell me what you think of this..I layered it & Made it quite different from my other BLAH Beats...Ok, & also..

BeatsBuy, I was wondering, I'm a visual learner, do you think you could consider making up a full "beat" in Fruity & actually sending me a link to download the FLP File, so I can learn what I need to be doing to make the actual song better?...Just curious, if not I'll work smarter, not harder, & See what I can come up with...Thanks in advance for all the comments & help to all.

:EDIT: Major Props to you Beats, you've helped me alot & I haven't even been here a month yet!...

Tutorial

Hey Ice... Here's the Reason 3.0 Tutorial I said I would make for you. I made it fast, but I tried to add good examples. It has notes pushed back to make it groove, it has pitch bends with the "Pitch Wheel", has reverb and delay effects, layering, and different instruments playing it's part in the mix. Hope this helps you better understand...

Here's the link: :D
http://www.beatsbuy.com/Reason-Tutorial-1.zip

Ya, change it around, learn, experiment, and have fun. I didn't make the beat perfect, because I want you to fix it and add your own twist. :p
