DIY variable link for mono->stereo compression

I have been using a stereo compressor that has the option for a variable link between the two channels so that the one currently exerting the most compression only forces the other one to compress, say, 70 or 80% as much. I like this feature, especially for stem/bus compression.

I also have two mono compressors which will work in stereo linked mode when I connect them together with a cable - but it's all-or-nothing: the unit that is compressing the most causes the other to compress by 100% as much, or they work completely independently. There are times when I would love to use the mono compressors together, but not at 0% or 100% linkage.

I just tried using a variable attenuator on the link cable connection between the two mono compressors and I tested using a signal generator on each channel from my DAW. It appeared to work exactly as expected - that is, when I turned up the level of attenuation, the relationship between the compressors responded by diverging in a corresponding amount.

I'm stoked - I probably won't use the mono compressors as a bus compressor, but, for instance, for a dense group of background vocals I think this will be very nice.

Anyone else tried this? Anything to worry about?
