Hey everyone.
my band is looking for a incredibly cheap way to get some rough recordings up.
a friend of mine has a 4track recorder and the Mackie dfx12 mixer and was going to sell it all to me for 200 bones and I was wondering if that was a good deal or not, or if I would be able to hook it up to my computer.

I have a ibook g4 and was wondering if there was other cheaper ways I could set up to do rough recordings with this instead of buying that hardware from my friend.

HELP!

I am a beginner and DIY kind of guy myself...

Do you have microphones? (what kind?). One thing to consider is that a lot of computers have noisy soundcards. In other words, they add undesireable noise to your music. It's a consequence of the soundcard actually being located inside the computer, rather than outside. If you have a decent room, I recommend miking everything as opposed to direct recording. I think you'll like the way it sounds. Is your band going to record live all at once, or individually track by track? Suppose you have one badass microphone, and your band members' schedules rarely mesh, you might want to do each track seperately. Suppose you have 10 badass microphones, and your band likes playing together, you might want to record all at once.

Check ouy my post... https://homerecording.com/bbs/showthread.php?t=258981. I think I'll be on my way to get some good recordings once I have one of those.

For the longest time, I used an old Ramsa PA mixer and just pre mixed everything and tracked the stereo outs into the sound card on my computer... As long as you take your time, It should sound listenable. Not amazing, but whatever, it's good practice anyways. Just pick up an old mixer, some sm57s and an ebay set of cheapo small diaphragm condensers, and have fun with it. That's how I started anyways. I'd probably just save the 200 dollars and check for stuff on craigslist, personally. Hopefully this was somewhat helpful. Have fun!

Serious down and dirty option is to look for two Behringer ECM8000 Omni mics and two used PreSonus TubePres.

These items are dirt cheap used. Set it up to record the entire band playing or multitrack it with a freeware DAW.

To get it into the computer maybe consider the Behringer UCA202 USB interface. I have one for my laptop but I only use it for it's digital I/O port. The analog I/O doesn't sound that great but it will be sufficient. These run about $35 new. Might even be cheaper options out there too.
