DIY Publishing Company

Does anyone here own there own publishing company? If so is there any advantage or even make sense to set up a company before you have a record contract or your music is being played on the radio?

Would it be easier to go through a regular publisher of maybe an administrator. It just seems crazy to give up 50% of your sweat and talent to someone who may or may not be able to help!
 
50% of a bunch of money is a lot better than 100% of no money... so, I guess it depends on how hard you want to work for it.

I've never owned a publishing company, so I don't know too much about it. Publishing is definately one of those "it's who you know" businesses, so maybe paying someone else to do it for you is a good idea if you're not willing to dedicate your life to it.
 
I am actually a part of a mediacollective that has just released it's first 10". It's not a company and nor do we aspire to be, since at the level I am playing there's hardly any larger market to turn to. But it works for me - I've dealt with labels as well, and it's great not to be bothered by outside opinions and demands on ones music. It IS alot of work though, and on the other hand I would like to focus soley on the music.
Bah..there are two sides to every coin.
 
It's easy to set up a publishing company through your performing rights organization, so you might as well. If anything happens with a label or another company that wants your copyright, you can always co-publish.

I suggest an administration company if your catalog is more than a few songs.
