well, not as good as buying a portable DAT, but, i just turned my Digital 8 camera into a portable 2 track recorder. it is battery powered and everything. most probably dont realize, but the "mic" input is stereo. i made myself a cable that goes from 1/8" stereo to two xlr. i tried a few different mics, including some AA battery self powered condensers, but the best sounding i have found so far are sm57's. kinda cool, everything is recorded at 16bit 48hz. imported some audio into my daw. nice and clean and everything...

oh yeah, transfered the audio digitally via firewire hooked up to the camera. you will probably need some sort of video capture program. mine lets me choose just to capture audio if i want...

if you're recording a small acoustic live set, this MIGHT be nice

Robert Rodriguez, in his book Rebel Without a Crew, talked about doing this. Shooting on film and recording sound on the digital8. After the film is transferred to digital video, you can sync the audio in your editing program. Pretty damn cool.

Of course, his first film El Mariachi, was done with a Marantz cassette deck. You use what you got, right?

the main reason i thought this was cool is cuz i travel to asia alot. i have been looking for a way to get decent audio recording of ethnic music along with the video (hobby) i take. the onboard mic on the cam sucks major ars. i cant get past the mechanical noise to hear anything else captured... i will post audio clips soon.....
