Anyone know of a good design with a reasonable budget. I want to build my own passive nearfield-midfield monitors. Have a very nice Dynaco amp to power them. I have built many home theater speaker systems but know nothing about a good driver for a monitor. Are full-range drivers a good idea for the monitors?

I am going to build rear surrounds (which will double as a second set of mains for a quick mix check) using some Fostex 4.5" I have. I don't think I'd be comfortable with them if that was all I had, there just isn't enough bass response. The larger full-range drivers *I believe* are designed to be used in fair-sized ported cabinets. I haven't looked at their T-S in a long time though, so investigate that for yourself. But it may not be the sort of thing you'd want to plop on a desk.

PartsX and Madisound both have two-way kits with 6.5" woofers that I think are pretty well suited for monitors. My monitors are based on the Madisound design, with a tweeter change and slightly different crossover.
