I thought it might me fun to share stories and pics if available on any of us that have built any of our own guitar's and basses.
I will start with my fretless bass (Pic included). I wanted a nice fretless bass with neck-through body and a nice stained finish for under $1,000.
My solution started with a 24 "fret" neck from carvin with ebony fingerboard. I have always liked flamed maple and aquired a rough cut flame maple block from StewMac for "neck blanks". It would not be big enough for a full body but as I was just adding body wings to the neck it was a very economical way to go. Other hardware 2-Tek bridge, originally installed EMG P/U and pre-amp (pictured) now with BassLines Music Man P/U and pre-amp. Total cost for parts was under $800. I must of burned up 8 or 10 jig saw blades to cut out the body wings from that flamed hard maple and hand sanded all the body contouring and rounding. We are talkin major hours in sanding he he.
Unfortunately the body being solid maple is just a tad bit heavy but hey we are talking some serious sustain!
I learned alot and made a lot of mistakes. The finished product came out fairly nice for my first time (I think any way). The Warmoth website has some examples of customer's self builts that blow mine away though if you have not looked there.
Any way here is the pic. Sorry no digital camera so it is a scanned photo and a little grainy. Anyone else out there with some DIY's? Lets show and tell the good, bad ugly and funny.
