Very helpful ! Any more info on Absorber and Bass Traps calculations please ?

Hey that is cool.
Diffusors are for mid & HF yes? What is normal freq. range for diffusion? With those calculatins from mhsoft, you can essentially have decent sized one for LF also.

But is that a good idea? LF should be absorbed right?

Read the link in the above post.

I think there should be a special post at the top of this forum that makes you read the ethan winer acoustics article before thinking about entering the studio building and display forum.

How would one diffuse wavelengths equal to your rooms dimensions? :)

you actually only need to use 1/4 wavelength when diffusing - but - it still requires diffusers with depths of 3-6' (or more) to make it happen... chances are, bass trapping below a certain range and diffusion above that probably makes sense. even so, small rooms do not typically "diffuse" well since the proximity to the listener, reflections will still likely be intact enough to miss the whole point of using it...

Yes I know. I was trying to get him to think. Assumptions roll off the tounge around here like net fact.

A low E note on a BASS is E1, with a frequency of 41.20 hz and a wavelength 837cm. This is 329.53 inches or a whopping 27.46 FEET long....TWICE as long as the average home studio. Now, lets diffuse that one in a studio with a length of 12 feet eh? OR even absorb it ;)

exactly!!, thats why I was questioning (ok I worded it worng) why the calculator whould allow that frequency??

you never know... someone might have a 15' x 30' room... :-)

You mean like this? :D

do you think that fella scientifally calculated the length of each one of those sticks?

As a matter of fact he did. This is a 2d Primeroot sequence. I believe these were calculated to .01" and machined by CNC. It took NINTY TONS of MDF(if memory serves me.) I've read the room sounds absolutely fantastic, although thats subjective net fact. There are also skyline diffusers on the ceiling, and absorption panels behind the monitors. I've never seen the rear wall.

seems like all that mdf would have some adverse health affects.

It's all sealed with lacquer. Only the best for George Massenburg ;)

Only of you smoke while leaning on it :-D

The neat thing about 90 tons of MDF... if his theory didn't work out as nicely as it has... he could have heated his house for 20 years!

How ya doin frederic? Just so no one else gets the wrong idea, I've been told its not a good thing to burn MDF in fireplaces or stoves. The burning resins can coat the inside of the exhaust pipes and chiminey which could cause a fire in them. At least thats what I've been told. Of course, I think you were just kiddin anyway, but thought I'd toss that in here. :D I think your right about the carpet though. I had ONE piece of veneered MDF over carpet in my old studio. Not only did it leave an impression, the spot was clean compared to the rest of it, which showed like a sore thumb even when cleaned. Cheap carpet though. I replaced it.

One thing about it though. I remember a friend who had a linoleum floor in his garage studio. He bought some carpet remenants and we laid a strip around the perimeter of the room about 2'-3' wide, with a randomly curved edge. Man, I don't exactly understand what this does, but the sound in the room was awesome when we finished. Like diffraction effects or diffusion or something. I've never forgotten that, and plan on doing it in my little studio, although I'll use laminate flooring instead of linoleum. It must be similar to using absorption in the corners, although it was only carpet, it must create some kind of "impedence" difference between the linoleum and the wall. No matter, the sound seemed to have an.. "airy" or a "smoothness" quality. It was absolutely great for acoustic guitars and vocals.
