I needed to build a custom patch panel with 16 Neutrik XLR/TRS connectors and a connector for headphones.

Step 1: buy stuff

16 x Neutrik XLRF/TRS panel-mount connectors.
1 x 1/4" stereo connector.
1 x roll of 500 feet of cable.
1 x chassis punch

Step 2: hook stuff up

By the time I actually built the patch panel, I had already cut custom cables for the right length to run over an arched doorway and to various pieces of my drum kit, so I pretty much just had to splice in at the right point and add connectors. For those 8 lines, I only connected the XLR side of the connector. I wired up four more connectors with both XLR and TRS. Finally, I left four blank connectors for future expansion.

Not much to tell about the wiring. Soldering to the Neutrik connectors was a pain in the backside because the solder wells tended to face in poor directions, but I eventually got them all put together. The strangest things were the solderless shield 1/4" male plugs. That's just weird. But I digress.

Step 3: chassis punching for fun and profit

Anyway, I got a chassis punch (which I have since used again on an unrelated project, so I'm glad I did). That cost a pretty penny.

The DIY bit was in coming up with a plate on which to mount all of this stuff. So I went to Home Depot. For $10 or so, I got an aluminum kick plate for a door.

Shown below assembled, with temporary mounting.

The next phase (this summer, when I have some time) is to build a vertical column up this wall and the wall opposite, and built a (permanent)horizontal arch across the doorway, and make it match the walls as much as possible.
