Hi all,

I am running a Delta 44 on Win2k with the latest drivers in Cubase and I keep getting distortion or clipping when recording. The strange thing is that when I record in Magix Audio Studio with exactly the same settings in the Delta Control Panel I get no distortion.

Any clues would be cool. :D

Cheers,

Jono

hmm. make sure your volumes in cubase (ALL OF THEM!) are set to 0db. aka, master mixer, your tracks, aux sends (just incase?...and actually, set these to -inf...), etc. etc.

Also, if you are piling up a lot of tracks, the combined volumes (without ever turning them down) usually WILL lead to distortion. sound fine alone, not fine together.

lastly, if it is distorted coming in - maybe it's not your comp. For example, when you monitor it (before you record it), are you hearing the distortion? how about through the mic pre or mixer? maybe you need to turn your source down, change mics, or put a pad in your chain.

Shackrock,

Thanks for your help.

I have set the levels on all of the cubase tracks to 0db, and I have set the input levels on the delta panel consumer. Although I am getting less distortion, I am still getting noticable distortion.

I suspect it is something to do with cubase as I dont get these problems in Magix Audio Studio on the same machine. I am currently changing the input settings on the mixer in cubase - is there anywhere else (such as in the audio settings) where I should change the settings.

Would changes in buffers affect this? I thought it wouldnt as it is distortion I am getting as opposed to choppy playback.

I dont know whether cubase is maybe much more sensitive to levels than magix but it is weird that it works in one and not the other.

Cheers,

Jono

well, i had the same issue's as you with cubase till i tweaked the buffer... that fixed it for me...

just a thought...

Hmmm, I thought the buffer just affected pops and clicks and latency.

Incidentally, were you using the M-Audio Delta ASIO asio device? I am using that.

This is driving me mad, and more help would be great. :D

i shouldn't comment further without your system spec's really but i found the ASIO runs very well on my systems (AMD xp2100)

don't use ASIO..WDM works a lot smoother (at least for me, XP and AMD). I think this is true for most people too.

ummmmmmmm, mess with your buffers....in cubase AND delta control panel.

This may not help you, but I was getting distortion recording thru my Delta 44 and it turned out I had the signal levels set to +4db which was too much for the unbalanced cables I was using. I put them to -10db and no more pops

The cables themselves have nothing to do with it -- it's the gear receiving that +4dBu signal that was having the issue.
