Hi.

I just bought my first guitar and amp(Fender strat and crate 15 watt amp)
and I need to know the differences in sound between distortion, overdrive, fuzz, and whatever else out there so that I dont sound like a complete fool when I am talking to people who have been doing it much longer than I have.

THanks

Couldn't tell you...
To me, they are all just different levels of distortion.
Overdrive, Distortion, Fuzz... in terms of least to most.
But I don't know anything.

that's pretty close.... though distortion could have as much gain as fuzz, but they exhibit different qualities; fizz is looser and softer, whereas distortion is more defined and hard.

no no

Overdrive is when you push tubes into breaking up, It's the sweet and harmonic sound that many players try to get. The best examples come from tube amps which are overdriving the power amp stage into a harmonic thrust of noise.

Distortion is when the sound is being, well, distorted. It takes the signal and nasties it up in some way. It can be an IC chip, or series of chips, or it can be caused by pushing something too hard. Like digital distortion when recording, or even by distorting the speakers on an amp. It's mostly caused by something not functioning like it should, though that is desirable in some cases.

Fuzz is a specific, artificially created effect. It is a variation on distortion, kind of a controlled distortion with a specific eq curve to sound like "fuzz". It's basicly comes from taking an alanog input and giving it a level that is way too hot and then cranking that, making a very bad sound. That is taken and refined, diffferently by different products, to make the fuzz tone you want.

Much better answer than mine... See... I don't know much,
I just use a ton of distortion. I don't particularly like overdrive, to be honest.
