Hi,

I'm really struggling with this guitar recording thingy ;)

ATM my signal chain is =
Gibson Les Paul -> mesa boogie dual rectifier->4* G12T-75 celestions
SM57-> Gyraf Gyratec -> Samson Compressor -> Sountracs solo 16
-> staudio 2000

Crancking the volume results in even more mud...

This is a rehearsal mix

And this is a small fragment of the guitar

Any tips? advice on the guitar?

On first listen, it sounds like you need to turn the gain way down. The level of gain is 100 times more apparent in a recording so you won't need as much. You're right in that recording at high volume for guitar like that will sound better. This topic has been posted before, at least twice a week. Here's a link I give everyone:

I actually ment the exact opposite:
When i cranck up the volume it sounds like the 200-600hz part is getting a gigantic boost, the tonality changes from a medium sound to absolute sucky sound.
With any lesser gain the substain just plainly sucks.

If anyone would be so kind to post a GOOD recorded guitar... (Punk/hardcore/metal)
only with an SM57 that would be highly appreciated !!

What I meant was that you had the right idea, but with too much gain it doesn't sound as good. Give that article I linked you too a good read, or at least skim through it and read parts of it.

Mic:
Almost fully on axis where the dustcap meets the cone and rammed against the grill.

And thx for the article, but I already red(/read) it trough ;)
I think I know the theorie but the practice seems to fail.:p

I noticed I like the center-cone mic the most because it has the most high's in it, but the distortion itself really starts ''sizzling'' when I point the mic at the dead center, it almost sounds like a phase issue.

When I go too much to the outside of the speaker cone it starts sounding dull.

Anyways thanks for the reply's

Turn down the bass. I struggled for a while til I said fuck it and just turned the bass down to like 3. No more mud. Sounds 10 times better. BTW I also use a Mesa.

You're starting to get the idea. A little science a little art. You might try pulling back just a little and see how that affects your sound. You might find a spot which is just a little less focused. IF the amp sounds good too your ears you're probably not far from getting it. EQ can help too like jonnyc said, turn down the bass. I'd do that a little at a time and at the same time move the mic around to get that just right balance.
