Anybody familiar with the quality of mastering they do? We all know they hold their own with duplicating, but they have a deal going on right now where if you dupe with them, they'll supposedly have a "pro engineer" master it for less than $400. Sounds too good to be true...(if the work is any good). Anybody ever used their mastering service/heard anything mastered by them/heard good or bad "word of mouth"? Anything at all would be more than I know now. Thanks.

Last I heard, they were a broker, so they don't necessarily use the same facilities all the time... (this isn't necessarily good or bad, just something to note!)

Okay Bear, but in your years of experience, have you heard anything good or bad about their mastering? And yes, I realized that multiple facilities means multiple engineers & varying levels of taste and quality. Perhaps since that is how they operate, it is too broad of a question to be answered. What does Blue Bear Sound charge? I didn't seen anything regarding mastering on your site.

My place is a recording studio, not a mastering facility... I can do lite clean-up, sequencing,etc... but I don't have a the signal chain or environment needed for the proper analysis that the mastering process entails.

And the most common thing I hear about DiscMakers is that they are pricey compared to others.... I haven't heard many negatives about the actual results though - only about price!

Perhaps a public forum isn't the best place to ask this, but who would you recommend? When a client of yours needs a project mastered, what do YOU do? :)

As I just wrote in another thread as well:
Stay away from any copying facility offering mastering services, I do not know of one single one who does a good job, they normally just "normalise" the material through a computer program, that's all.

Shopping around is really necessary, because your results are totally dependant on the skill level of the guy doing the work. I have been looking for someone to master my new CD for a long time. I sent .wav's to several studios that offered a "free" or "low cost" samples of their work. I sent the exact same .wav file to all of them, and the results varied widely. I was actually a little surprised.
After all that, I ended booking time with a mastering studio that happens to be about 2 miles from my house. My appointment is next week, July 5, and I can't wait!

I believe DiscMakers give you your money back if you are not satisfied with the results. You may want to check that out.
