Easiest way to disable the on board soundcard from a Dell 4600?
Simple stuff here I know.

...

you have to get into the BIOS...

im not sure what it is for a Dell PC, but normally to get into the BIOS you hit Esc, or one of the F# keys (1-8) right after the computer boots up, and before it loads windows. thats when you can get into the BIOS
now when in the BIOS, there will be a number of options (all Bios menus are somwhat different, if not from the same company) do not go around switching other values if you dont know what you are doing, only look for the option that has something to to with onboard sound, it will give you the option to enable/disable it.
you may have to fish througha few sub menus to find it

but what i would do is, look on the Dell site to see what key you have to press before windows starts, and what menu the sound option is under

LB, thanks man, appreciate the info,,,,, Ill definately be checkin that out!

its probably the del (delete key) that you gotta hit. It'll say on the splash screen while youre booting- ya know- the one that says "Dell" or "Award" or whatever BIOS your machine uses. Itll be in there somewhere.

usualy the delete or F8 key, sometimes the TAB or F2. When you get in there use the up and down arrow keys to flick through the menu. The page up and page down keys change the values.

Look for ONBOARD SOUND then use the page up or page down to change from ENABLE to DISABLE.

Escape key takes you out of each sub menu. Remember to use SAVE SETUP AND EXIT on the way out or you wasted a whole bunch of time.

Alec.

Thanks ya'll, I printed out this page for future reference.
Have a great day!

Is it absolutely necessary to disable the onboard sound when installing an alternate sound card?

Nope. If it isn't giving you trouble (driver conflicts, etc), then you can leave it enabled. Mine has been for over a year.
