OK. The envelopes (automation) in Reaper continue to be one of the most powerful features and the bane of my existence.
Reaper has this annoying habit of creating envelope points for me automatically. They are, without exception, completely unhelpful.
Situation 1: I've moved the volume slider on a track to the general area where I want it to be. Then I decide I need more fine-grained control, so I open the envelope panel for that track. An envelope point set to where I'd put the slider is created automatically, and the slider is reset to 0.
Situation 2: I have a media file in a track. It's a little bit too loud, so notch down the volume with an envelope around it. I copy-paste it a few times throughout the track and generally muck about with it. Later, I decide that it would be better in its own track so I move it to a new one. It tries to take its surrounding envelope points with it though and makes copies. Sometimes, it makes extra copies. Sometimes, there are as many as 3 or 4 envelope points in the exact same spot on this new channel. This gets especially bad if I'd tried to do something fancy like fading the volume up or down gradually.
Situation 3: I have a complex series of channels with routing and effects. I also notch down the volume in a few spots using an envelope. For a later project, I want to use the same routing and effects as a baseline, so I copy over the channels and delete the original media. With the copy come all the old envelope points, so I have to go through and delete them.
Anyone know how to turn off automatic envelope generation? #3 I can live with (since I'm copying the channel wholesale), it at least makes sense. But #1 and #2 are incredibly frustrating! I hate it when my software tries to be smarter than me!
