hey all

Can someone shed some light on the seeming disappearance of sites like www.directxfiles.com (now goes to Cakewalk's home page) and others which had info and downloads for DX plugins. Not a month ago DirectX Files was up (and pretty interesting to read I might add). Was there some kind of a crackdown I don't know about? It doesn't seem they were doing anything illegal or unethical...all the plugins were either free by design or purchase-to-download.

cheers

That directx site was put up by Cakewalk. It had been around for many years and has looked the same for a long time. Directx plugins never caught on the way VST plugins did.

Erm...that doesn't sound very confidence-inspiring. I was interested in DirectX primarily because I was thinking about using Cakewalk software on this system I'm slowly trying to build, but I get the feeling once again that I'm behind the curve. Oh dear...forgive me if I seem a little green, I'm still trying to find my legs in this digital recording thing.

So at the risk of asking a dumb question that may have once been asked but that I haven't found after a search: am I to assume that DX somehow not in favor or obsolete or something, and should I try to look for VST compatibility instead? VST plugins seem to be all the rage from other posts I see here. OTOH, there's that VST adapter that Cakewalk makes, so it may not be an issue anyway. Hope I don't sound like a moron here.

Not a big deal, everyone was green horn at one time.

I use Cakewalk's VST Adapter. Works great. Opens up the world of VST to ya. And there is a big "free" VST world to boot, much bigger than the directx free world ever was. Its worth every penny of the cost of that wrapper plugin.

Although there are many directx compatible plugins, VST is the big enchilada. Directx stuff is still being done but many if not most now come in both flavors.

Unfortunately there are some very cool DXi only plugs such as Cyclone.
So I hope DX/DXi compatibility is not completely abandoned, unless all DX/DXi s are either released as a VST/VSTi, or a "DX to VST Wrapper" is produced.
I like to think Cakewalk had legitimate technical reasons not to have direct VST compatibility with their products, other than avoiding using a standard established by one of it's biggest competitors. If you recall, the VST to DX
Wrapper was added later.
Please correct me if I am wrong, but doesn't Cubase accept BOTH DX/DXi and
VST/VSTi directly with no wrapper?
