Direct-X Effects Problems!

Whenever I add Direct-X effects to my recorded track, not only is the playback horribly choppy, it will freeze up the computer and I have to re-boot the whole system.
And since I switched to 24 bit from 16 for recording, when I add just one effect, it takes up like 50% of my CPU, which is bad.

What am I doing wrong, what should I change?

Gidge has been a great help getting my system running (Thanks!)
He suggested cranking the buffers in the N-Track, but no change there yet...

Any ideas?

DMA setting on your hard drive? Lack of ram?
 
Which effect? What's your CPU?

Try reinstalling n-Track. Sometimes that'll help, especially if you've changed hardware recently.

Track Rat- Ignorant question for you..What's a DMA?...But I have Plenty of RAM, I am sure of that...Thanks!

Slack-I'll try that. Sometimes it's the simple things that fix the major problems. I'm using Freeverb and Blueline plug-ins.
My CPU is an AMD 6 K2, through my Compaq Presario
(VI ducks a quick right from Slackmaster)

Another question: What exactly are VST effects, what recording meduim are they used on, and are they only native to Cubase?
 
Sorry, just linking myself to this thread. I too want to know about DMA.

Go to control panel>system>device manager>disc drives and check the properties of your hard drive. Under the sttings tab, there's a check box for DMA.
 
Ooooo K62. I agree that you need to check your DMA settings, however don't be suprised if you don't get many effects out of that processor. (certainly more than ONE though) :(

DMA was already checked.

I was able to add at least 4-5 effects ona track before I switched to N-Track's 24-bit capabilities..
Is this just a coincidence?

RESOLVED!!!

I re-installed N-Track, and no probs with effercts now, better CPU levels.

n-Track has VST support. Most of my plugs are VST.
