We were trying to record the guitar direct along with micing the amp to have the option of reamping or throwing in a track with a modeler plugin. Using an Avalon U5 ran the guitar into hi z input and the thru output into the amp, gave us horrible noise. Then we used a spliter jack on the guitar, one cable to the amp, and the other to the u5, amp was noisy again but only when the guitar was connected to the u5. The signal going to the computer was great(avalon mic out into motu 896). I know we will need to get a reamp box to send the signal back from the motu to an amp, but im sure using the "thru" from the avalon should not give us any issues, thats what its there for. Is there a problem with the U5? thaks for any help.

What happens when you hit the active to thru switch??

doesn't make any difference, neither does the earth lift. Plugging it into a power conditioner doesn't help either.

What kind of noise? ...a buzz? Are the guitar amp and the U5 plugged into the same AC circuit? If not, it could be a simple ground loop.
