Can somebody tell we if it's a good idea to record my band via direct recording with four microphones.

Ans if so, where do i have to place the microphones.

I want to make a live-recording in the practice-room.

Sure, I did the same thing using my 424MKII. Great sounding tapes. Use the direct feature, the switch if it has one, The MKII did, and just experiment with mic placement. For micing drums, guitars, and vocals You will get really nice results with shures sm 48's 57's and 58'. I suggest this because you said you want to record the band live and will need a few mics

so far i've basically been doing that.. but i have an idea for next practice (assuming i get another damn mic)...

track 1 - buss left, channels 1 & 2 will have mics into emm bussed left... these will be for drums (i'm considering where to place these still... one on kick, one overhead... 2 medium height in front of drum... snare and kick.. i'll experiment)

track 2 - bass on DI from either channel 5 or 6 (which ever one can route to track 2)

track 3- vocals, direct from sm58 singer's using

track 4 - guitar direct, close miked cab with sm57
