Direct monitoring

For some reason when I'm recording vocals through my Pre Sonus Firepod into Cubase SX, I can hear the music via the headphones that are plugged into the presonus, but can't hear the vocals over the top of the music! Seems like a simple issue, but I cant get vocals over the top of the beat at the same time. Help, anyone?

It's not "direct" monitoring as you define it, but you can get a mixer which will help. Not familiar with cubase but if your soundcard and inputs are setup correctly, it should have a monitor input sound on the audio track you're recording.
