Direct In Box

Can anyone explain the main use for a direct in box ? Should I be using one for my SM57 into a Tascam 244 recorder ? Should I be using one for my electric guitar directly into my recorder?

A DI will match a high impedance output to a low impedance input or vice versa.

It also can do the folowing

* Reduce Hum, Buzz, electrostatic interference

* Helps output a stronger signal ( if your instrument wont
put out enoungh, you can Di to the mic preamps on your mixer

* An active DI can give you a cleaner low end and clearer highs

* combine a direct signal through the DI to mixer and a miked signal from the same di to miked amp to mixer.

You don't HAVE to use a DI but there are benefits.

I mainly use a DI box in live situations. The Guitar goes into the DI and out to an XLR connector to the Snake and mixer... also I have another guitar cord coming out of the DI box to my amp, so I can hear myself as I play. The main house speakers carry the signal that The audience hears.

I only use DI's for a raw (non amped) Guitar/bass and for converting jack to XLR.

I run sound for a local band... and instead of putting a mike on the bass amp I run from the bass preamp out into the di and then into the mixer. That's my use... dunno if it's correct but nothings burned yet.
