I have been using a POD to record guitars direct through my mixer into the computer. It sounds pretty good, but can be a little dull. How can I make it more livelier? Will a direct box help at all?

I am not sure what you mean by livelier. You should be able to dial in just about any kind of sound you could want through the use of the software that comes with the POD. You don't need to invest in a DI box The POD is a direct box that just happens to do an exceptional job of modeling amps. If you haven't yet, buy a midi cable and hook your POD up to your computer and use the patch editor software that came with it.

I haven't hooked it up with midi cables yet. Does it make it much better?

yeah it is.

the software that comes with it allows you to edit the parameters of all fx, gives you access to more amp models, and allows you to combine different amps with different speaker cabinets. this way you can dial in the sound that you want, save it, and even upload it to your POD.

Initially, when I got mine, I toyed around with it and after a few hours I started thinking there must be more to it than this for 300 clams -it sounded great, but didn't offer much in the way of control. Then I hooked it up to my PC and was blown away. I think you'll be fixed up once you try this.

alrighty , i have a pod , and havent hooked it up to my computer through midi yet , partly because i dont know how .. what type of midi cable do i need ? and how much is it ?

The cable is cheap. It uses a 5 pin DIN male on the POD end and whatever you have on the PC end. Soundcards generally run this through a joystick port. And adapters are available that have two MIDI DIN plugs (IN and OUT) connected to a 15 pin joystick plug. I haven't yet tried this partly due to other projects and partly due to fear of spending endless hours having a blast with a new toy instead of doing some real work. :)
Dmcsilva: I get the function of the MIDI in on the POD, but still haven't figured out what the MIDI out is for. Does that upload the current physical settings on the POD?

Yeh, this way if you dial in something you like on the POD itself you can upload the settings to the editor and save 'em or tweak 'em. beware though - it will become a serious time suck once you start messing with it.

I bought midi cables and attached the POD correctly, but when I run the POD drivers program it searches for it and finds nothing. It then tells me that if I use it manually I will have to set all the settings? How do I get it to detect it correctly?
Thanks

I am not sure what problem you are experiencing. Is the software installed properly? Are your MIDI cables hooked up correctly (MIDI out to MIDI in and MIDI in to MIDI out)? I am in Texas for a few days so I am not able to replicate your problem. Your best bet is to search or post in Line6's forum-they can probably help you out.

I'm not sure what it is. The wires are connected correctly. I have soundblaster Live and it is using an I/O card so it might be that. I'll have to contact both companies.
Thanks
