Hello -

Anyone have any positive (or negative) experience with using digital voice recorders to record ambient sounds or the occassional instrument noodling?

Needs: USB / Apple compatible.

Any recommendations or advice would be much appreciated.

Cheers,

John

They are usually mono and use severe digital compression (data not dynamics). If you aren't concerned with sound quality then they will work fine. Probably fine for noodling but not so fine for usuable ambient sounds.

Thanks for the info ... any recommendations then on (relatively) less-expensive options for ambient recording.

Much obliged.

The SONY portable minidisk recorders are fabulous... they have ATRAC compression but it's pretty subtle at the lowest settings. Much better than a cassette recorder and you can't get any more portable...

Thanks ... will check it out. I assume they have USB or firewire???
