I've been recording on a porta02 4-track for awhile now, and I want to go digital if possible...

Rather than buying a Yamaha MD8 or something like that, I'm toying with the idea of computer/soundcard/midi, etc... but I've got a rather new laptop that seems like it could be a good tool.

question: what's out there for recording on a laptop, since I can't make use of the cool sound cards? Is there some sort of PC Card/USB solution? I'd love to take advantage of that 11 gig harddrive... Just point me in the right direction...I see that Roland makes some kind of USB midi port...what would that do for me?

Or where can i check for this information?

Well it's good to see someone else out there struggling for a good laptop system. I was frustrated trying to find something good to record with. You can go several routes. The expensive route is to get an expansion chasis and then make use of all those great PCI cards. The other route it via PC card(VXpocket..still pricey) or through your USB ports. Yes I believe Roland does have some USB audio/digital converters out there, and so does Opcode(Sonicport and Datport) so finding one that works with your laptop shouldn't be too hard. I have the new apple powerbook and went out to buy the VXpocket to run with my Digital Performer 2.6. It recorded nicely a couple times, but then went haywire. I'm probably going to send it back and get something different. Well good luck to you. I got most of my information from magazines and the great people at SWEETWATER(1-800-222-4700). I talked to Jason ext. 1373. He was very knowledgeable. Good luck to you.
