Digital Performer, 828MKII, & external effects: howwwwww?

Greetings, folks:

This is my first post here and it's...well, long. I've been banging my head against this for a couple of weeks. Repeatedly. Resources already found: "How do I use an external effects processor with CueMix?" and "Using Digital Performer With External Hardware." Plus the DP manual.

But: no dice. Clearly I'm lacking some fundamental understanding, but I hope that someone can take the time to walk me through this, because my usual method of "read a bunch and punch buttons" has failed. Now I am frustrated, and sad.

What I'm using:
  • Digital Performer 4.61
  • MOTU 828 MKII
  • 2 Shure SM81s
  • External effects box(es)

What I'm doing:
  • Recording 12-string acoustic guitar via two SM81s into the 828's Mic 1/Mic 2 inputs

What I want to do:
  • Record the Mic 1/Mic 2 inputs dry
  • Be able to process those signals through the external effects boxes
  • Mix the dry and wet signals as needed

What's plugged where:
  • 2 SM81s into 828MKII Mic 1/Mic2
  • 828MKII analogue out 1/2 into external effect box(es) L/R inputs
  • Effect box(es) L/R outputs into 828MKII analogue inputs 3/4

It's the software setup in DP that's got me stymied. I've tried a send to analogue 1/2 from Mic 1/Mic 2, and recording analogue 3/4, and a bunch of other things, but it's clear that I just...don't...know...stuff. I just get weird results, none of which I want.

If some kind knowledgeable soul can take some time to walk me through what I'm doing wrong, I'd be most grateful. (If you're curious about what I do musically, I'm user ianwood12 on Soundcloud)

Many thanks,

Ian Wood
