So, I finally made my mind up and got a soundcard (Midiman delta 66), and now I need either a mixer or a mic preamp to complete my setup. Does anyone have/use the fostex vm04 digital mixer? I'm intrigued by the internal digital effects (i.e. I'm hoping to avoid buying a compressor), and while it only has 2 mic inputs, this would be enough for 75% of what i do.

On the other hand the mackie 1202 has 4 mic inputs, and while it has no effects, it has an external send/return to hook a compressor up to.

any thougths on these two or recommmendations for solving the mic preamp/mixer/compression problem as effeciently as possible woudl be appreciated.

internal effects on mixers are generally not all that highly regarded for pro studio usage... but maybe you can get by without a compressor, i couldn't though

Go with the mackie. If you plan on recording
drums or strong vocals, a compressor is what you're going to need. you can always get efx
at a later date. Just my 2cents
