I recently bought a roland vm-31000pro digital mixer on impulse. How could I not? List price is over $1000 and I scored one new for $389. I have a Darla 24 w/o spdif. Here is my question:
Say I want to record through my mixer (just got it so I haven’t even recorded anything yet.) I plug in my vocal mics, drum mics, guitars, etc into the ins of my mixer then conect the bus outs to my soundcard’s breakout box. This is what is happens to the sound in that process: analog in (voice, guitar, drums, etc.) converted to digital then converted to analog again then out through the bus into my soundcard which converts it to digital again. Is this correct? (see crude diagram below)
Sound (analog) -----------> Mixer (analog to digital to analog)--------------------> Soundcard (analog to digital)
Does this mean that my sound quality is compromised as a result? Would the sound be significantly improved and noticeable to untrained ears if I bought a soundcard with a spdif I/O?
