When I mix down all my tracks and playback the mixed down track, I have some sort of slight digital clicking...what's that?

My mix down method is:

Select all the tracks
Bouce To Track

I've ran into this before and corrected it...but I forgot how.

I'm working with S3PE btw

Are the tracks clipping? Try turning the master volume down and see if that helps... I find that Sonar seems easy to clip if you stick with default settings for volume.

Not sure if it's really digital clipping. But it's kind of like a clicking noise and it become more apparent as things get louder.

But it doesn't do it when I'm just playing the tracks back. It ONLY does it in the mixdown.

sounds to me like you are just pushing the CPU too hard! I get similar effects with my P4 2.6 1.25 gRAM... i am recording 16 tracks at once and when I start mixing, adding plugins, it gets a little shaky! Like if I move the slider over to view the other tracks that are off screen during playback I will get a nasty crumbling digital noise! Try optimizing your system for audio recording... stop unneeded services and programs and so on to free up your cpu.

Myriad_Rocker,

How many sound cards do you have in the computer? More than one? If so, make sure Sonar is only using one of these cards.

Other than that, what sound card are you running? ASIO or WDM? If WDM, have you tried re-profiling the card? Have you tried increasing the latency?

Just a couple of suggestions which might fix it.

Well, I don't think it's an issue of using too much CPU. I'm running a P4 3.0Ghz with Hyper Threading. I've got 4GB of Kingston HyperX RAM....

My sound card is ASIO but I believe it's also WDM.

But when I just do a play back and record that with another wav recorder, I don't get the "clicking" thing.

Did you try any of my suggestions?

How do I increase latency? I'm familiar with the term and what it does, I just don't know where to go to do it.

From memory (at work atm), Options -> Audio.. one of the tabs under there.

I would say use the ASIO drivers. To change latency go to options>audio>asio panel (wave profiler)

Any suggested settings? I'm pretty sure I'm already using the ASIO drivers.

What is your soundcard? What version of driver? Do you mix MIDI track + DXi track? or just mix several audio tracks? Is there any IRQ conflict with your soundcard? (look@Windows' control panel). How many HD (phisical HD) do you use? How's their speed?

The bigger the buffers the more latency you'll get. I am doing 16 tracks at once with buffers set to 1024 and get 10.7 ms of latency on a p4 2.6 1 gig RAM. But... I have arranged my setup so latency is not a factor.. instruments to mixer to headphones, direct outs to audio card. This way i hear it live and can set the buffers big enough to divert any possible "click" sounds (watching clips of course!)

Go to windows task manager on the bottom it lists number of processes running . When everything is normal during an operation make a note of the processes running . Then when problems arise you know if something isnt takin over that shouldnt be there.. The cpu usage is the real indication of whether its working harder than normal during an operation. Same notation during normal operation applies here. The mem usage number on the left should be noted and gives an indication if you need to do a disc cleanup
In your case just adding to suggestions given Disc cleanup What is the availible space on your hard drive? Also I would turn hyperthreading off..

Edit..... With sonar 3 working cpu usage prob will be at !00%.....in which case see what sonar says lower right....

I'll check the things suggested but I'm not turning off HyperThreading...not just to bounce to tracks. I'll just play it back and record into a wave editor...there's not clicking that way. It's what essentially happens on a bounce to tracks, right?

Or am I mixed down incorrectly? I select all the tracks and go to "bounce to tracks."
