Digidesign Mbox yay or nay?

The Focusrite preamps are sneered at, but other than that I haven't heard anyone diss it.

I've got one and like it quite a bit. The biggest downside is that you're limited to two channels so if you need more inputs than that you have to go to an outside HD recorder or step up to the Digi 001 or 002. I do all my recording on a Korg D1600 then import the tracks to Protools as .wav files; so I haven't used the M-box at all for overdubs--can't speak to the quality of the pre's or converters.

The preamps and converters are a big step up from the 001, but not as good as the 002.
I have a 001 and a friend of mine has an M-box so I've been able to compare.
I think it's a great little box.
When I get around to buying a notebook, I'll get an M-box. Great for location stuff and working on mixes away from the studio.

I love mine, but I also have a 002 for when I need more than 2 inputs. 2 ins and outs is really limited, but usually enough for a person recording one or 2 tracks at a time. That's what I did for the first 12 years of my home recording career.

Its *fantastic* for location recording with a laptop. I've recorded high quality audio for video on location with it, among other things. As long as you are cool with the 2-in, 2-out limitation its a very easy step into good quality recording.

Take care,
Chris
