I’m definitely a newbie. I have great hardware, from what I have read, a new G4 w/ 867 and 1.5 gig of ram. I play strictly acoustic w/ vintage instruments, prewar Martin & Gibson. Our string band has been contradances w/ single mic configuration and we really like it. I have recorded in a number of studios, but have done very little recording on my own. I have three separate projects in mind and am considering trying these on my own. Enough for the background

I have been looking at the Digidesign 001. Does anyone what type of connection goes between the card and the unit? Firewire or USB? If I build a small studio in my basement, my best space, in terms of quiet and size, would be located away from my computer area. Therefore, I would loose the visual contact between the studio and control room. My other concern would be the distance that my cables would need to travel. Could someone comment on these concerns? I have recorded in a house with separate rooms, in fact, on separate floors of a house. It worked okay, but probably far from ideal. Please comment.

I think it is USB! But I would go for the fire wire MOTU 828!
Any way! The long cable runs should be lright just make sure that u use balanced cables.
U have to remeber u not goin to get pro studio results any way due to rooms sizes acoustics etc! and the expertese!
So u shouldbe fine with the set up u have suggested!
Im glad to see some one else using a Mac as well! There are not many of us on this board!
What software are u planning to use??

Im using PC and My Digi 001, is Firewire...

You can record in a different room than your control room.. although if it's just you, the best set up is to have a large room as a studio room, and then a small vocal booth off to the side..... And If the computer noise is a problem, you can buy isolation boxes...

Anyways.. the way my studio is set up (It's only me, I do everything... So I need to have access to everything at all times...)

I have a large Studio Room with my computer desk etc....., and a vocal booth off to one side.... The way Digi works, is, Record button is number 3 on a Keyboard, and playback is the spacebar.....

I have a computer Keyboard mounted in my vocal booth, with only a 3 button and a spacebar, all others are removed, for simplicity.. I have a long, 20 foot extention to this keyboard, and when im in the booth singing unplug the main computer keyboard and plug this one in.. and presto, I can sing, and start and stop the song, and record, and re-record all from my booth...

The Digi001 is a Firewire device? I thought it had a dedicated PCI card like most of the other such devices...

Sorry Guys..... I meant that my Glyph Drive is Firewire....

I was eating leftover pizza and typing at the same time.....

It's DOES have a Dedicated PCI card... My bad..
