ok i'm looking for a little guidince here i want to buy a home recording package and i've been looking at the digi001 i have about a 1000 to spend on it and a dell computer that can do anything i want to jack my isterments directly in to it 1:is digi a good product is it the best i could get for my money (i'm recording rock music here live guitar, bass, midi drums) ?
and 2: would i still need a DI or any other gear ?

it is good, but I would not say the best for your money.

A good $1000 combo is this:

Delta 1010 with Vegas . $600
outboard preamp. I use joemeek vc6q. $400

with the delta 1010 /vegas, you get :

-unlimited tracks
-96khz recording(if you want it)
-directx support (a multitude of cheap or free plugins out there)
-arguably better sound quality over the digi001
-your choice of any software program you want to use

With the joemeek vc6q, you get:
-a high quality preamp that is better than those on the digi001
- An outboard compressor
- an eq channel, with sweepable mids

with this combo, you lose:
footswitch support

I hear that the delta 1010 is now shipping with Logic Delta , which is logic audio optimised for the delta series.
it adds Vst support
you also get the unity piano and acid express and siren express.

You can download protools free for 8 tracks of fun.

I sometimes use protools free with my delta 1010 and it can be a lot of fun on the audio side( when everything is working.

Hi,
Personally Id rather use a digi 001 with pro tools than a delta 1010 with vegas. Since I use a mac this was an easy choice because the midiman 1010 has crappy asio drivers for mac.

On the otherhand, on PC the digi 001 is not supported well at all. Meanwhile the delta 1010 works nicely on the pc and comes bundled with vegas. What I like about the 001 is that it has the highest caliber 3rd party plugs( as does motu's mas) but none of them are for pc, all on mac. What I dont like is that these plugs are not cheap.

If I had a pc Id probably use a delta 1010. But I dont use a pc;)

Well i'm definently a newbie. I'm just getting into home recording. and i know a whole lot about computers but almost all of what you said went over my head ( i need to read more on this stuff). so delta would be good for recording anything then (for pc i have an old mac ) say full band recordings or just me ? ive been pluging directly into my soud card and recording with acid music and cooledit (works alright) . i just want to be able to make a studio quality recording. i'm really not sure about plugins and things . i've seen pc plugins for protools on warez sites (if you want some let me know).
but do you think delta would be a better option for a "newbie" with a pc to do this stuff (i know i'm probably asking the same crap over but i really don't know).

Thanks For all your help :)

I also use protools free on my system, and sometimes I wish that vegas had some of it's features.

the ability to rename .wav tracks
the ability to delete files
destructive recording( so that I don't have ten files of bad takes)
midi note on recording.
quick punch

I would say that for $725 total with the preamps, protools is a very good starting point

also, I don't know how the delta 1010 drivers would work with your mac. They work Flawlessly on pc.

But don't forget the amount of support that delta has for it, and the sheer upgradeability of the system.
you might not need 24 tracks, but it is not difficult to have a 30 track song either, especially when you are recording effects returns.

with most any 8in card, you just plug in and record. You will need a preamp(there are two in the digi001) to connect stuff like a condenser mic(which requires phantom power), or a bass guitar etc.

plugins are the software versions of outboard units, so instead of having an outboard reverb, you can use a plugin. Some plugins sound amazing too.

I really cant say if the delta with a pre will be better overall, because it all depends on how much money one's got.

THe delta with pre : 1000
digi001 725

Although, you could get a cheaper pre, on the level with the 001's and stay in the $725 range.

With the delta 1010 you get unlimited tracks, and support for everything from directx to vst to you-name-it, but you have to pay extra for midi sequencing, which the digi001 already has onboard.

Hi,
Since your using a pc you might as well get the delta 1010. It wont be any harder to set up than pro tools would be. There arent many plug ins for pc on rtas. Since I use a mac, the pc plug ins wouldnt work, but thanks for the offer( I got mine dont worry;))
