well, delta44 is cheaper, and 4 ins and 4 outs.
digi 001 is about 2.5x as much money, and has more then double the ins/outs, headphones usage, pre's, software, etc. etc.

but, despite that stuff, is the core sound of the 2 systems much different? i mean, is one considered better than the other? are the pre's on the digi really something good - or just your average pre's?

i ask because i can get a used digi 001 for probably 400 if i haggle enough...and right now i got my delta 44 running on my system. so, is it worth the switch - quality wise? ha.

I would guess that they are comparable in sound.

The real issue here is software. The Delta product can be used with any recording software. As far as I'm aware, the Digi001 works only with the ProTools LE that it ships with. (You can consider some of the large price differential to be due to this -- that is, the Digi001 comes with recording software and the Delta44 does not.)

I've wanted to hear about this for awhile actually. I've got the 44 and was thinking of eventually upgrading....any other thoughts?

Are you serious? That sucks. I am getting one in a lot of studio equipment I am getting off of work and I was thinking that I would use it since it is in the lot of equip instead of buying a MOTU 828mkII, but if that is the case, the Digi 001 is getting sold and I am buying the MOTU 828mkII. I REALLY don't want to be tied down to ProTools.

Yep. That sucks...

The Digi 001 is getting sold once I get it.

From DigiDesign Website:
  Digidesign Software Compatibility
Pro Tools LE 6.1 for Mac OS X & Windows XP
Pro Tools software will not work in "standalone" mode without the Digidesign hardware installed.

From MOTU:
The 828mkII provides cross-platform compatibility with Mac OS 9, Mac OS X (version 10.2 or later) , Windows Me/2000/XP and all of your favorite audio software and host-based effects via WDM/ASIO/Core Audio/Sound Manager drivers. Or you can use the included AudioDesk workstation software for Macintosh, with 24-bit recording/editing and 32-bit mixing/processing/mastering.

Hey guys. I think you're wrong. Digidesign hardware products can be used with many software packages including Logic, Cubase, Nuendo, Reason, Live, Acid and others. Most of them use ASIO drivers by Steinberg to perform this. Others, like MOTU's Digital Performer, talk to the hardware directly using DAE (Digi's drives scheme).
What you can't do is use the Digidesign software with non Digidesign hardware, for example Protools with the Delta cards.
From the economical point, it doesn't make much sense to buy the 001 and another software since you'll be paying for the software twice.

Cheers, Andrés

I have been reading through their whole site and not once did it mention recording WITHOUT ProTools, so I just shipped off an e-mail to them to ask for sure. I know they say that you can't use ProTools without the Digi hardware plugged in. I'll let you all know once they e-mail me back.

In fact, one very popular high end combination is to use Logic (for its midi features) with the Protools TDM hardware. They are even starting to support Rewire from Propellerheads, which allow some very interesting possibilities including running Reason inside Protools.
Cheers, Andrés

I hear you. I have a 001 but if I could go back I'll go for a firewire device, since you can go to a rehearsal place with that and a laptop and record drums or whatever you want. Maybe Digi's own Digi 002 rack or something like Presonus Firestation. And that Motu device looks great too.
I don't like the fact that Digi doesn't support some cool plugin technologies like VST or Audiounits. They even don't have support for their own OMF format witout spending big bucks. Other softwares already have it as a built in. Just don't forget that with the 001 you're getting a very good software package, that you'll have to buy separately with other cards. That'll mean some more money to spend.
My guess is that other DAWs like Cubase or Logic gives you more power than Protools LE on the same computer, so maybe that's a defining factor too. At least on the mac.
Good luck. Cheers, Andrés

The site said you could not use ProTools LE without the 001 card being plugged in.. I woder if you could get an 828, keep the 001 card in and record through both the 828 and the 001? Hmmm... That way I could use whatever program I feel like using for me and if a client comes in I could say "Yeah, I have ProTools!" :D

I have taken a liking to Sonic Foundry toys. I have been using Acid for all of my recording because I only have a crap sound card and I don't need to multi-track, but Vegas is nice as well and I can multi-track in that.
