Digi M-Box... What do you guys think?

So, What do you all think of the New Mbox....???
I hear it's gonna be about $499 US

Here's a snippet from the the Digi site for those of you who are not familiar with the unit....

I think it's great..... Not avail for PC yet, but they "say" thats coming in the spring...

Im going to LA in May... Im taking my Laptop for business purposes... Hell, I might be able to record a few tunes.. and then load them into the big(er) system when I get home..... Awesome...
 
I hear the preamps are the same as in the Platinum series.

I was excited...

I looked at this with excitement (I even posted earlier this week) and thought, 'Pro Tools, at home, wow'...then I thought, expensive support, plug ins and further upgrades.

In reality I doubt I'm ever gonna going to be in charge of a massive Pro Tools studio and all I want is a functional setup at home.

So, on that premise I bought n-track studio 3.02 (24 Bit version) and I'm getting an M-Audio Audiophile card.

Total cost: £160 for software and card + loads of free plugins as and when they appear.
 
protoys...........but it does look pretty sexy, and that's what really matters, right? ;)
 
The only thing that bothers me is that there is only two inputs. For good roadwork, I would think they will have an expansion that allows up to at least eight.

Otherwise, if it is as good as the Digi001, then at $500 it might be worth it.
 
I think the market they were aiming for was the musicians/ songwriters on the move..... but yeah... Yeah 8 inputs would be nice for recording gigs..

For my use.. writing and tracking songs (which I play all the instrument myself).. 2 inputs is enough....

One thing im iffy about is that seperate USB module.... To me that will be an inconvenience, to carry around and set up...

It would have been nice if they put all this on some form of laptop internal soundcard.....(along with the focusrite pre's) :)

LOL...I can't even imagine how they fit the pre's in that tiny cable modem sized box along with converters, etc., now how the hell is that gonna work in a PCMCIA card? ;)
 
Well, it won't be released for the PC for a long time anyway....

Hey Voxvendor, what do you think of the preamps on the digi 001? Oh yeah, and do you run PC or MAC?

I find the Pre's to be very useable....

I would say they are close to the Pre's in a Mackie VLZ board...

Nowhere near what a nice outboard unit would do... but as I said.... Useable....

I use them on minor commercially released stuff, but on the same token, I have to eq the shit out of vocals to get them good...

I like Eq, so thats ok...:)

I just got rid of my Focusrite ISA 430...($3000US) I could do all vocals flat on that... never adding anything but a touch of compression in the mix.....

Unfortunately I don't have enough clientelle through here to warrant having that Pre....

$3000 sitting there being used twice a month was a waste.. Although, when I did use it, it was sweet..



Here is a song with all Digi001 Pres.. and singing though an SM57.. I guess it's the best way to let you know what the pre's are like...

Those vocals sound really good on something wrong. Thats really a 57 right into the digi? What reverb is that on there?

What the setup of your comp? I'm gonna take a shot at building my own 001 dedicated comp over the summer

My set up is a P3 1000, 512 mb ram, intel chipset, and im running the 30 gig Glyph Project/ X Drive

Building your own set up is a great Idea.... Just make sure you follow all requirements... I see so many people running 128 mb ram and some cheap, slow, 10 gig no name drive.. and they wonder why they aren't getting the full 24 tracks and lots of plug-ins....


PC is great for this set up.... The whole point of the DIGI 001 set up is having pro recording options at a fraction of the cost....

Generally speaking Mac is a *better* computer, but PC will do you fine if you follow all the digi requirements when building, and a pc is half the price...
 
The reverb is D-verb... It's really good and comes FREE with 001

($495, to buy seperate....)

Yeah, it always cracks me up that people will spend like 2 grand or so to build a pc and buy the 001 for it, but don't spend the 5 minutes to check and see if the stuff is compatible

Do you think that the glyph was worth the extra cost over just a regular 7200 or 10000 RPM hard drive?
 
To Glyph or Not to Glyph??

Im not really a computer guy, and there has been great debate about this.....

What is inside a Glyph is a 30 Gig Seagate Baracuda...... I have heard people say that, you should just go out and by seagate baracuda... But then I have also heard that the one in the Glyph is slightly modified and has a faster "seek time"

Im not sure if "seek times" is the proper terminology, but thats what I have heard.....

Im running the Waves Gold Bundle.. and I get LOTS and LOTS of big plug-ins going and full 24 track recording.....

I think it's not worth the risk, for the sake of a few hundred extra bucks... I mean your already spending a good amount on the computer and DAW

I have had a few of the people on other digi related boards come on and say Im retarded for spending that money on the glyph... But then when I do a search on them, I see all their posts about the problems they are having with their set up and read them talking about how 001 sucks....

Mine is perfectly flawless and has never let me down.


Geez, Im starting to sound like a salesman..... But seriously.. It's great.... I was Anti-Daw 7-8 months ago... and now I wouldn't go any other way... In fact, I just sold my adats off...

I think my Plug ins, have more to do with my Ram and my CPU rather than the glyph... I didn't mean to imply that the glyph was what was giving me lots of plug-ins..

But it's sure helping everything else:)
 
In answer to your original question...I like the M-Box, but would have loved a firewire Digi001 more!

I don't know about Glyph performance...I assume it to be about the same as any other Barracuda.

Is the Glyph Firewire or ??

I run different SCSI drives off a Adaptec 2940 and get really fine performance. Well, I did until I moved it all over to a new box I built. Now I have PCI Bus busy errors, so I need to spend some time tonight figuring that out.

I think the M-box, with no Digi001 firewire, is still an attractive mobile or alternative ProTools setup.
