Hi,

Which of these soundcards would produce better recordings?

Thanks for your help in advance.

Darren.

The MOTU most likely, but I have no idea what its pre's and convertors are like. I have a 002 and it works- but even an ADAT XT20 run into the ADAT inputs sounds better than the onboard pres and convertors.

If you're looking to record HD (above 48k) then the 002r will give you only its 8 analog inputs and 2 S/PDIF. The ADATs don't work at that resolution. Again, I have no experience with the MOTU, but it looks like its designed more for hi res recording.

Digi doesn't make the best stuff. At all.

AFAIK, all of MOTU's current gear supports ADATx2 (MOTU-specific) and ADAT S/MUX (universal standard) for doing 96kHz over ADAT. The way it works is that it bonds two ADAT channels together and alternates samples between the two channels. If you want eight channels that way, you need two optical cables in each direction, of course.

Most ADAT gear should be able to handle S/MUX, though if it doesn't have a pair of inputs and outputs, it will only do four channels. In fact, my jaw dropped when I found out that the 002 didn't (particularly since it's just a simple software change).

Unless you have a very good reason to buy the Digi, I'd pick the MOTU hands down. Feature-wise, it's really a no-brainer.

The 896HD would be my choice.

BUT, actually producing better recordings would be up to who in engineering it, and what other gear is in the chain (other pre-amps, etc).
